Adrian Flanagan spent an interesting childhood travelling to and living in several countries in Africa and Asia. Like all children growing up he had dreams of what he might one day achieve. His imagination was captured by reading of solo sailors and in particular of Sir Francis Chichester and his yacht Gipsy Moth IV in which he made a solo circumnavigation of the globe. He was also inspired by the voyages of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and Sir Chay Blyth.
During his own solo voyage, Adrian shared the Pacific with the restored Gipsy Moth IV and was distressed to hear of her grounding on a reef. With millions of others he was relieved to learn of her salvage and repair that allowed her to continue on her voyage and enter Sydney Harbour.
